How to breathe deeply and functionally

Do you ever feel like you just cannot get enough air in? Do you feel that taking a deep breath never feels satisfying, and you feel like you need more air?

If this is the case, you are probably not breathing functionally, so your deep breath is actually upper chest and shallow. A big gulp of air through the mouth will only move air into the upper chest.

Breathing deeply and functionally is using the diaphragm. The diaphragm is the largest breathing muscle in our body; it is located under the lungs.  As we breathe in, the diaphragm moves downwards, creating space in the lungs to take in air, and as we breathe out, the diaphragm moves back to position. When used correctly, the diaphragm enables us to take a deep satisfying breath.

One factor of dysfunctional breathing is poor coordination of the diaphragm, which is associated with poor posture. Working at a desk, slumped over a mobile phone, or slouching on a couch can contribute to poor posture and the inability of the diaphragm to move freely.  The diaphragm supports the spine, so using it correctly can assist with posture correction.

The mechanics of breathing functionally depends on your ability to use the diaphragm effectively. Deep breathing can be easily learned; correcting posture, breathing through the nose to achieve a greater volume, and slowing the cadence of your respirations are techniques taught in breathwork.

Knowing how to do this effectively and breathing functionally ensures that air moves into your lower lungs and effective gas exchange occurs.  Slowing your breathing, breathing lighter and deeper, enables oxygen to move from your bloodstream into your organs and muscles, sending a message to your brain that all is well.

Once learned, you will know how and be able to take a deep, satisfying breath!
